He was a playwright and screenwriter, best known for his theatrical works Prick Up Your Ears (1964), Entertaining Mr Sloane (1966), and A Stroke of Luck (1968). Orton's plays include the early sixties "Dandy" trilogy: A Closer Pass at the Brigands (1961), A Slight Case of Homosexuality (1962), and An Evening with Richard T. Waugh (1963).
